United States Recovery of Western Europe Post World War

United States Recovery of Western Europe post World War II Most of Europe was demolished after World War II and had to rebuild but most governments were in debt and out of money because of the war. Many people didn’t have food to eat or more to pay their taxes which made it completely difficult for the governments to recovery tax to start rebuilding. Fortunately the United States was free of war and devastation making us the richest country in the world. We were able to give help to Europe and its allies to recover from the war. A great deal of Europe’s success would not have happened without its initial Foreign aid from the United States.Foreign aid is the transfer of money, goods, and services from one country to another. This helped to rebuild the economies of Western Europe and to help contain the Soviet expansion in the aftermath of World War II. The United State and Europe had to work fast because if Western Europe did not rebuild and grow strong quickly, it may s oon fall to communism since the United States, and most of Europe had allied with the Russians in order to defeat Hitler and the Germans but they were also worried about the Russians and the  spread of communism. After helping destroy so much of the continent, killing over 55 million people, the U.S. used the Marshall Plan to put billions of dollars back into the European economy. The Marshall Plan was announced in June of 1947 and was named after Secretary of State George C. Marshall. It was very successful. Truman extended the Marshall Plan to less-developed countries throughout the world. The Western European countries involved experienced a rise in their gross national products. The United States have $13 billion for assistance in Western European countries for four year. By the end of the Marshall Plan, all participating countries were stronger than before. The plan help Europe economically recover from the war.

Market plan The company should start exploring. Ideas about the product are sought through consumer requests, competitive products in the market which may make the product not to be sold in the market due to competition, conducting market research which helps managers to collect and interpret facts that help in putting the product more efficiently into the hands of customers. It also evaluates distribution channels best suited for the product to the market and consumers acceptance of the product in the market. Diversification which effects growth through development of new areas that are clearly distinct from the current business. It may be through   conglomerate diversification which takes place when an organization diversify into areas they are not currently operating or concentric diversification which occurs when organization diversify to areas related to but distinct from current operations e.g. the company may diversify to women or men’s clothing depending which field they were currently operating. The company should also do screening of ideas. This is a preliminary evaluation which is carried out to determine whether the ideas has possibilities and whether shall be further developed or dropped. The bad ideas should be discarded and good ideas taken into consideration. It should also contain situation analysis which includes information on costs, sales the market competitors and various processes in the macro-environment. Market segmentation by subdividing the market of consumers of a product in order to capture more sales effectively and efficiently. It may lead to increase in marketing opportunities because when markets come close to group of customers, they respond to changes in the markets and can develop or modify the products. t also contains a SWOT analysis of the firm. This is a method of assessing organization and environmental factors which contribute to an organization’s competitiveness. It also enables managers to develop a strategic profile of the organization based on the information they have collected It also assumes an   organization will achieve strategic success by maximizing strengths and opportunities while minimizing weaknesses and threats. Strengths are internal conditions that provide the organization with an advantage relative to competitor’s e.g. good financial resources, better manufacturing capability, changes with new technology. Weaknesses are negative internal conditions that can lead to a lowering of organization performance e.g. absence of necessary resources, poor product image, managers with inadequate strategy skills. Opportunities are current or future conditions in the environment that is favorable to an organization’s current or potential outputs e.g. growing number of customers, introduction of new technologies that an organization can easily exploit diversification of the clothing. Threats are current or future conditions in the environment that is unfavorable to an organization’s current and potential outputs e.g. entry into the market of low cost competitor, rising sales of substitute products. Specification: The ideas are expanded to a realistic recommendation where a further research is conducted or carried out on features and competitors probable actions. This is where the idea is examined and it helps to know how the competitors react to that idea in this case the clothing brand juicy couture. Marketing mix which is a combination of different marketing decision variables being used by affirm to market its goods and services e.g. product mix which includes the shape, design etc and promotion mix which includes methods of communicating to customers and sales promotion. Development of idea is the next step. This involves building of prototypes to be shown and inseminated or distributed. The prototypes are models of the real thing or a sample of how the final product will look like. When it has been developed, it is taken to customers for them to see any products they may involve or their goodness. Based on the results from customers the product is then restructured so as to take into consideration the customers desires. The process continues until good quality products are produced as per customer’s specifications. Then, judgment about feasibility of the products are proved or disapproved. Samples are tested in the market and analyzed. From there the exact specification is then chosen which will attract the majority of customers. After all that, then there is commercialization step whereby it involves full-scale production of the product and extensive advertising and selling in the market. Branding is the use of a name, term, symbol, or design or a combination of these to identify a product. It includes the use of brand names, trademarks, and practically all other means of product identification. A brand name is a word, letter, or a group of words or letters. According to Adcock, marketing principles and practices (2001), â€Å"A brand is not a product that just happens to have high awareness, nor is it just a recognizable name or logo, although both these are often present. It is so much more; it is a powerful stimulus that conjures up a complex impasse and level of expectation about itself and what it can do for a consumer†. In branding, the company should analyze the situation and come up with a list of problems facing the brand as well as opportunities for new and improved products. The results of analysis of situation should picture the current position of the business and likely environmental changes. It should also highlight a number of problems and opportunities. It should be done for the product the firm is considering to enter. An important of the way customers perceive an offering is the recognition of that offering as a brand. A brand can either be an asset or a liability depending on the attitude of the customer towards it. Brand names are adopted by customers as a short-hand identification of the product, and taken as an assurance of the general quality and characteristics of the product. The following strategies and techniques might be used by the company to successfully brand itself. They should employ concentration strategy whereby it focuses on effecting the growth of the product. Can be done through market development. This is gaining a larger share in the current market or expanding to new markets. It may also focus on product development which is improving the existing product. Individual brand names: This is a technique used when a company wishes to separate its products and does not think there are any benefits from joint associations. Multiple product brands: Juicy Couture Company may use one standard name, often the company name for all its products it’s producing. This can offer marketing economies where a strong favorable brand name carries across the whole assortment, to the benefit of otherwise weaker products, and assisting the acceptance of new products by consumers and intermediaries alike. Multi-branding: This is where a manufacturer for this case Juicy Couture Company may use umbrella brand together with a different sub-brand name for various product offering. It may design their products in a way which is unique from other products in the market. This makes customers to be aware of unique products in the market and they will start asking for that product in order to purchase it. Therefore branding of products contributes to the acceptance of the product in the market. If products have bad brands, they will end up not being recognized by customers in the market and if brand names are good which attracts the attention of customers it will end up being purchased in large quantities in the market hence good sales. Cambrian Explosion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Cambrian Explosion - Essay Example New York State has already gained the significant results of teaching about evolution presently. David Campbell, a teacher in Florida, says that it is for the first time that the Department of Education has modified the standards of teaching evolution in public schools. And calls it, "the organizing principle of life science." But it has been noted that the science teachers all over America are finding it difficult to turn a "culture war into a lesson plan." As per the education experts, even as recently as three years ago, the American public schools have been giving very short shrift to evolution. The poor treatment of evolution can be seen reflected in the creationist beliefs of students. Recently in 2000, Thomas B, Fordham Foundation evaluated the evolution education standards in public schools in all 50 states which was really disappointing. Florida among 12 states receives F grade. But with time it can be seen that now the students have an idea related to evidence of evolutionary change which is an achievement in itself. In 2006 the bills changed and attempted to alter public school science curricula introduced in New York, Alabama, South California, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Indiana and several others. And "only seven states including New York and California got A, with 12 receiving a B, and 8 plus the District of Columbia receiving a C. Seven states got a D, and 15 got an F. Iowa was not included in the report because it does not set standards for any subject." So, New York undoubtedly ranks high on the grounds of teaching of evolution in public schools. Campbell lastly concludes that, "if he forced them look at themselves in the evolutionary mirror, he risked alienating then entirely." 2. What is the difference between science & belief Theory & story David Campbell remarks that in a nation with evangelical Protestantism and various other religious traditions that stress on biblical readings and believe in God as supreme creator of every species, it is obvious that students will fear evolution and even science. They might consider science as a belief which is hostile to their faith. The subject of evolutionary science is considered fraught by the students who are taught right from their tender years to believe that God has created man uniquely in His own form. And when Florida's science standards came out Campbell saw that the students studied science in disbelief. He also mentioned that "Faith is not based in science" and "science is not based on faith". He also stated that he doesn't expect that the students should believe the scientific explanation of evolution but to start forming a base he concluded that he expects then "to understand it". The basic confusion of the word "science" being related to "theory" and "belief" arises from the everyday changing meaning of the word and their usage in science. One of the misconceptions is that, "Theories become facts when they are well supported and/or proven." It is so because with time if any contradictory evidence turns up, the theory might be reevaluated or even abandoned. And then it is not science but only a story which is not believed any more. ................. supported and/or

Economy of U.K Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Economy of U.K - Research Paper Example Employment situation The global financial crisis that hit the U.K. did impact of all sectors of the economy resulting in high employment rates. However, as the economy continues to solidify, additional jobs continue being created thereby resulting in a slight drop in unemployment rates. The latest employment figure shows that the unemployment rate in the U.K. stood at 7.6% in September 2013. This accounts for a drop of 0.1% compared to the previous quarter where the rate stood at 7.7%. CIA (par. 1). is worth noting that even though the unemployment rate continues to fall, it is unlikely that it will fall sharply due to the job losses experienced in the public sector. The welfare and pension reform introduced by the government is also likely to affect the rate of unemployment since it is likely to attract citizens to join the labor force (Osborne 5). Inflation Inflation is another major problem that U.K. citizens have been grappling with for the past six years. Reports show that the p rices of commodities in the country have been increasing at an alarming rate. For instance, the inflation rate in the country was only 1.30% in 2004 and 2.30% in 2007 when the global economic crisis began (BBC News 2). However, the rate increased to 3.60% in 2008 due to rising prices of goods and services marked by hard economic times. Nevertheless, the U.K. government has managed to contain the situation as the country continues to experience a decline in inflation rates every quarter. The U.K. inflation rate fell to 2.20% in October, down from 2.7% the previous month (BBC News 2). In fact, this marks the lowest rate since 2012. The major decline was registered in the transport sector where transport price declined by... This paper stresses that the U.K. economy has been one of the worst hit by the global financial crisis in Europe. This resulted in a fall in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to an all time low. However, GDP figures released recently indicate that the U.K. economy is on the path to recovery. The country’s GDP as of 2012 by purchasing power parity stood at $2.375 trillion according to the CIA. This stresses that the global financial crisis that hit the U.K. did impact of all sectors of the economy resulting in high employment rates. However, as the economy continues to solidify, additional jobs continue being created thereby resulting in a slight drop in unemployment rates. Inflation is another major problem that U.K. citizens have been grappling with for the past six years. Reports show that the prices of commodities in the country have been increasing at an alarming rate. The trade balance between the U.K. and other countries has not been good since 2007. This is attributable to trade deficit marked by an increase in the value of imports and lower value of exports. Research indicates that the U.K. has been importing goods more than it exports to other countries resulting in a wide trade deficit. The author talks that regarding imports and exports, the biggest U.K. exports for the past few years comprise of nuclear reactors, mechanical appliances, boilers, and nuclear rea ctors. The second biggest export items in the U.K. include mineral fuels and oils, and their derivatives including mineral waxes and bituminous substances.

Film treatment - Essay Example When the scientists ask more about the aggressive aliens and outer space, there get no further response from the 847Z aliens. Without heeding the earlier warning from the 847Z aliens, humans keep sending their information and location to space. Since then, an active bomb has remained buried deep in space. One day in 2055, the 774C aliens arrive on earth silently. They received the message that scientists sent 20 years ago and decided to explore this unknown planet. Black-Figure Amphora with Scenes of Apollo Entertaining Dionysus and Research Paper

Black-Figure Amphora with Scenes of Apollo Entertaining Dionysus and Hermes, and Theseus Killing the Minotaur located at the Chr - Research Paper Example Apollo is standing between Hermes and Dionysus, who are seated in folding stools. Apollo is playing the kithara or the lyre in between the two. The lyre seems to be an award for musical competition. The artwork was made in Athens between 530-520 BC (Chrysler Museum Website). The arts are a result of Greek myths. The artworks are categorized under the Terracota Gift of the Mowbray Arch Society 2003. They are in the 18th floor room a & b. The art shows Hermes, who is also referred to as the messenger god having some wings attached to his shins. At the left, there is Dionysus seated, who is the fertility god. He also serves as the wine god. He has been saved as an infant by Hermes (Chrysler Museum Website). The other side of the arrangement is the Athenian hero known as Theseus. The hero is locked in a mortal combat with Minotaur. Minotaur is a beast that has the body of a human being, but the head of a bull. He looks very scary and monstrous. In addition, there are two maidens that are looking at Theseus. They are keen on what Theseus is doing: he is decapitating blood spurts and Minotaur from the neck of Minotaur. According to the existing Greek legend, Theseus, who is a son to King of Athens, Aegeus, had volunteered to be among the seven young me and maidens that were annually sent to the city of Athens to be used as Crete’s tribute and were to be sacrificed to the Minotaur. Theseus, instead of becoming a victim, killed the beast and ended up rescuing all his companions. The artist of the mentioned artworks applied Lysippides’ painter manner. The overall dimensions of the figures are 16.5 inch, which is an equivalent of 41.9 centimeters. The object number of the arts is 2003.18. The art gallery is 114 (Chrysler Museum Website). I chose the above artwork due to the thrilling and mythical story behind it. I am familiar with the story and choosing this artwork would actually provide me with more detailed information about it than what I already knew. Minos, the King hated the Athenians because they killed his son. In order to revenge, he ordered the sending of the Athenian youths to Crete to feed the Minotaur – the half bull and half man. He used to live in the labyrinth under the King’s palace. King Aegeus was very angry and sworn that he would go by himself and kill the Minotaur, however, his son, Thaseus went. The drama reached its peak when King Minos’ daughter, Ariadne, fell in love with Theseus and went ahead to help him in the fight. She sneaked past the several guards and gave Theseus a sword and a long ball of string. Theseus entered the maze, eventually loosing the string. He came to the Minotaur’s lair and had a ferocious and terrible battle with the monstrous Minotaur. He won the battle and the Minotaur died. Later, he found his way out the terrible maze by following the string trail (Connor 132). The above interesting Greek myth served as a motivation towards my desire to know more about the artwork related to it, hence the choice. Besides the narrative behind the artwork, the efficiency and the expertness of the creator of the artwork also played a big role as a factor that influenced my decision to choose this particular artwork a lot. The artist has used expressive lines in the creation of the photo. This is because the picture portrays, in a detailed manner, the intention, or the target of the artist who created it. In artwork, expressive lines serve the purpose of revealing or depicting the artist’

American Type(s) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

American Type(s) - Essay Example Trompenaars seconds the power dimension using the hierarchy dimension of culture. All individuals ought to understand the positions they hold to adopt effective interaction skills. In addition, human interaction cuts across the social, political, and economic spheres. It is better to adopt a polychronic culture where human interaction is valued over the activities in the modern day world. Edward Hall presents the three common dimensions that separate the American culture from the rest of the world. He analyses cultures through time, context, and space. He places Americans within the dimensions of low context, monochronic time, and high territoriality dimensions. Americans fall under the low context dimension due to their attention to detail. They acknowledge that time is for the essence to obtain a holistic view of life. However, Hall rules out the fact that Americans fail to attach value to human interaction. The social aspects of the American culture are highly influenced by human interaction. Shwalbe, (1996) explains that individuals invent the social world from the patterns of belief and action. There exists an American type that views the social world in form of a human artifact. For example, in America, foreign cultures are viewed as being bound by irrational accounts such as gender bias yet such bias is ignored in the local culture. The American type is bound by patterns of belief that seem natural and must be religiously

Why I want to be a Nurse Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Why I want to be a Nurse - Essay Example I believe being a nurse is more of a calling than a profession. Taking care of others has always interested me. There is something that happens within me when I help another person. I not only feel a great sense of purpose but also experience happiness in my ability to help someone in need. When you help and take care of someone; it makes you feel that you have contributed in making their life more beautiful, less painful and more hopeful, at least that’s the way I feel about it. I once heard someone say â€Å"A doctor treats a disease that a person happens to have, but a nurse treats a patient who just happens to have a disease.† There is so much suffering in this world today and since I am an extremely sensitive and compassionate young person, I feel personally challenged to contribute in whatever way I can and make a difference in this world. At present I volunteer at a local veterinary animal hospital and also a care home. I am extremely interested in geriatrics - t he branch of medicine that deals with the diseases, debilities, and care of aged persons. I believe that pursuing a career in Nursing will enable me to learn and provide professional medical assistance to these people who are in need. I am sure the nursing profession will no doubt be challenging and demanding, and that’s why I keep with me the words written by Rn Cardillo Donna (2001) where she goes on to say â€Å"When the reality of your chosen profession hits, it can be overwhelming. But never lose sight of the reason you chose to enter this glorious profession – to help others, make a difference, and make the world a better place to be. That’s what it’s all about†.

Young Girls Gone Wild Essay Example for Free

Young Girls Gone Wild Essay A crowd of young girls watched in awe when the lives of people in their town were cut short as they hanged, lifeless and cold their feet dangling just feet above the ground. One young lady was even smirking at the horrid sight as she came to realize her extreme actions had paid off. This young lady was Abigail Williams. Abigail was a 17 year-old girl. Through Abigail Williams a girl in The Crucible, the author, Arthur Miller describes his perception of young females during the time of the Salem Witch Trials making them out to be selfish, attention seeking, and manipulative individuals who are willing to go to great lengths to get what they want. Whether it be dancing around a fire, accusing others of witch craft, or inflicting self-harm, Abigail’s outrageous actions would were a major contribution to the chaos in the town of Salem. There are many different events in the play that show how teenage girls act during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. But all the chaos in the town of Salem seemed to have started with a few young girls. One particular young lady that comes to mind is Abigail Williams. She went against the rules of the town and was caught dancing and singing in the woods, which was thought to be extremely bad during this time. It all began when Abby cried out â€Å"I saw Sara good with the devil! I saw goody Osborn with the devil, I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil!† (Miller 1235). Abby’s claims along with some other odd events sent the town into complete pandemonium. Abby’s questionable actions; dancing, singing, accusing others of witch craft, give the reader room to make assumptions about the characteristics of adolescent girls right from the start of the play. A specific event took place later act in act one. There had always been tension between Abby and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was the wife of John Proctor and had been suspicious of the relationship between Abby and John for some time. After a scandalous conversation took place involving John and Abby, and more and more people started being accused, Elizabeth began to come to conclusions abo ut the real motive behind all the accusations. When speaking with her husband about Abby’s intentions, Elizabeth explains to Mr. Proctor,  Ã¢â‚¬Å"She wants me dead John, and you know it† (Miller 1240). Elizabeth has no doubts in her mind regarding Abigail’s ill intentions. She knows that Abby would be willing to take extreme actions to replace her as Mr. Proctor’s wife. At this point in the play Elizabeth looks to prove to John that the young 17 year-old girl was out to get her. This is just another way Arthur Miller coveys his thoughts about young women during this period of time, it shows Abby as self-centered and crazy. At the end of Act II, Elizabeth’s greatest fear had become true; she had been arrested for witch craft because of a claim made by Abigail Williams. At the beginning of the act Marry Warren has a poppet, which is a term for a handmade doll and hands it over to Abby. For Abby, this was the perfect opportunity to set up Elizabeth due to the fact that Marry Warren lives with the Proctor Family. When Marry isn’t looking Abby sticks a needle in the poppet and leaves it in the Proctor house. Just moments later Hale comes forward with shocking news that â€Å"Abigail were stabbed tonight, a needle was found stuck in her belly† (Miller 1246). Later the needle is found in the Poppet at the Proctor house giving strong evidence to Abby’s claim, that Elizabeth stabbed her. Clearly Abby was plotting the arrest of Goody Proctor and she went as far as stabbing herself to get Elizabeth in trouble. Even an online source can agree that the message Miller is sending about young women is anything but positive, writers of an online article say â€Å"Abigail’s cunning is shown again in Act II when she frames Elizabeth Proctor for witch craft. Later in Act III she even accuses Proctor who she claims to love†(Shmoop). Although Abby is willing to justify stabbing her own self to be with Proctor, she still is quick to accuse him. This makes it clear that nothing was going to stop Abby from getting what she wanted. This quote also makes her sound delusional because she was okay with harming someone that she claimed to love. This is just another strong piece of evidence to prove the Arthur thought of young women as manip ulative. As the play goes on Miller continues to convey his opinions or gender bias through Abby Williams. Different events continued to take place bringing the teenage girls into the spotlight. They seemed to be the center of attention for various reasons, but this did not seem to bother them in the least. Abby bring drama to the town once again as she cries out to the court room, â€Å"I have been near murdered every day because I had done my duty pointing out the devils people-and this is my  reward? To be mistrusted, denied, and questioned like-â€Å" (Miller 1258). Abby is yet again playing the role of the victim. The people in the court start to become more aware of her vindictive behavior. She seems to always worry about herself which again, proves that Miller was trying to convey that young women were self-centered and manipulative. Toward the end of the play Abby began to realize that people were starting to catch onto her devious ways. Miller revealed â€Å"Abigail stole much of her uncle’s money in hopes of escaping with Proctor† (Slader). The online source was describing her selfish ways by Abby taking a huge portion of her Uncles money, who had raised her, her entire life, to save her own self. This is just another quote that justifies Millers point of view of girls during the Salem Witch Trials. They were manipulative, self-centered, and crazy. There is no denying the way Miller felt about young teenage girls in Salem in the late 1600’s. His perspective on adolescent females during this time is clearly displayed through the character Abigail Williams. There are many pieces of strong evidence to support the claim of Millers gender bias and the actions Abigail takes are proof that the girls were manipulative, self-centered, and attention seeking.

Culture of American Indians Essay Example for Free

Culture of American Indians Essay In Against the Grain, environmental journalist Richard Manning (2004) argues that notions of class and property are a direct result of the emergence of agricultural civilizations beginning 10,000 years ago. This is because of the social necessities demanded by distribution and storage of surplus. Conversely, he points out the contrastingly egalitarian nature of the hunter-gatherer lifestyles and the deeper social ties which result from cooperative food acquisition. Consider for example, the Plains Indians of North America prior to the arrival of European settlers, who would utilize their knowledge of buffalo movement patterns to haze and herd them, towards a cliff. By diverting the stampede of a large number of animals to their sudden vertical death, they would obtain a caloric pay-off through minimal effort, but â€Å"required social organization and sharing, both of the labor and of the proceeds.† (Manning, 2004; South Dakota State Historical Society Education Kit, 2008) Yet despite this element of uncertainty in hunting and gathering, Richard Steckel notes that towards the end of the 19th century, the Plains Indians were among the tallest people in the world and argues despite the numerous technological and agricultural advances they did not have, they were surprisingly well-nourished compared to whites, indicating that agriculture should not be taken for granted as the sign of social advancement it is purported be, Manning notes that, in the absence of storage means and preservation technologies, it was impossible for the Plains Indians to hoard bison meat. Therefore wealth accumulation was impossible. As such, â€Å"communal feasting became the payoff for social organization,† argues Manning Agriculture on the hand, created social stratification in the form of governance, hierarchy and other institutions necessary for the management of food surplus. Although there is certain room for question to be made about the true egalitarianism of the hunter gatherer cultures of the Plains Indians, they certainly lacked some of the rigidly defined political structures which characterized those belonging to the cultures of Europeans at the point of first contact. Comanche leadership was rather informal, usually identifiable by consensus rather than by any formal nomination to the position and the longevity of a war chiefs authority lasted only as long as they were at war. (Bial, 2000) The Blackfoot people maintained a flexible social structure, a band, which was in constant flux. As such, social relationships were not determined solely by kinship but by residence. In modern times, the case for the difference between hunter-gatherer Native Americans such as the Plains Indians of pre-modern times and the agricultural Native Americans can be observed in the difference between the Inuit peoples, who live a predominantly hunter-gatherer lifestyle out in the Arctic regions (Snow, 1996) and the peoples of the Cherokee and Lakota. The Inuit are noted for their strong sense of community and flexible division of labor among gender lines. The Cherokee and the Lakota, however, have now long been agricultural societies characterized by their class and gender divisions, as well as their contentious disposition towards identity and blood quantum laws. Identification of Unknown Carbohydrates | Lab Report

Identification of Unknown Carbohydrates | Lab Report INTRODUCTION One of the main types of nutrients is the carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the most vital foundation of energy for your body. Our digestive system has a capacity to change carbohydrates into glucose or most commonly known as blood sugar. Our body gets energy used by our cells, tissues and organs from this sugar. Carbohydrates also stores additional sugar in our liver and muscles. Carbohydrates may be simple or complex depending on its chemical structure. Simple carbohydrates are also known as simple sugars. They are commonly established in refined sugar such as white sugar. Complex carbohydrates of starches includes grain products like bread, crackers, pasta and rice. MATERIALS AND METHODS A. Identification of Unknown Carbohydrate Samples Approximately 1.00 ml of the known carbohydrate samples and the two unknown samples were transferred on separate labelled test tubes. About 1.00 ml of Molisch reagent then 1.00 ml of concentrated H2SO4 was added to each sample. The test was observed for any change and was recorded. With the use of new batch of samples each time, the remaining tests were conducted: (a) Iodine test 1.00 ml of iodine reagent was added to each sample. (b) Benedicts test 1.00 ml of Benedict reagent was added to each sample then heated using water bath. (c) Barfoeds test 1.00 ml of Barfoeds reagent was added to each sample then heated using water bath. (d) Seliwanoffs test 1.00 ml of Seliwanoff reagent was added to each sample then heated using water bath. (e) 2,4-DNP test 1.00 ml of 2,4-DNP was added to each sample then heated using water bath. The identity of the unknown samples was determined by comparing it to the known carbohydrate samples. B. Hydrolysis of Starch Exactly 50.0 ml of 5% starch solution was transferred in a 100-ml beaker. Precisely 5.00 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid was added. The sample was covered with aluminium foil and was heated using water bath. Two 1.00 ml volume of the sample were transferred in a test tube. Exactly 1.00 ml of iodine reagent was added to one tube and 1.00 ml of Benedicts reagent was added to the other. The reaction was observed. The sample was heated continuously. Two 1.00 ml volume of the sample was transferred between every 5 minute interval and tested with iodine and Benedicts reagent as above until formation of blue-black complex in iodine stops and formation of brick red colour in Benedicts reagent ensues. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONÂ   In Molisch test, the result turned out to be positive or slow reaction. It is because of the formation of the reaction with alpha-naphthol in the occurrence of sulfuric acid. In this test, all type of carbohydrates will give a positive result. Benedicts solution is a deep-blue alkaline solution used in testing the existence of the aldehyde functional group, -CHO. Benedict;s reagent consists of blue copper (II) ions which are condensed to copper (I).These ions will then be precipitated as red copper (I) oxide which is not soluble in water. In Benedicts test, monosaccharides and disaccharides except for sucrose give a positive result. It is when the result is a brick red precipitate. In Barfoeds test, the copper ion in solution oxidizes reducing monosaccharides. This is for the formation of a carboxylic acid and red precipitate of copper (I) oxide in 3 minutes. In Seliwanoffs test, the reagent dehydrates ketohexoses to form 5-hydroxymethylfurfural which will further react with resorcinol, that is present in the reagent, to produce a red product in 2 minutes. In Iodine test, all polysaccharides such as glycogen and starch give positive result. The sample turns to blue-black color.

Aspartame :: essays research papers

I have had friends who were having symptoms, had all kinds of tests and were taking all kinds of medications and when they stopped consuming Aspartame, the symptoms disappeared. Written by Lisa Zak Physician Credentialer University Pediatric Associates, Inc. Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo: In October of 2001, a friend's sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed she was in so much pain. By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. Because of her pain and sickness, she was sure she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of. She also wanted a last hoorah, so she planned a trip to FL (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd. On March 19th her brother called to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they >>> believe she had MS. He recalled an E-mail article I might have sent to him and asked his sister if she drank diet pop? She told him that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment. He told her not to open it, to stop drinking the diet pop, and then E-mailed her the aspartame articles sister called him within 32 hours after the phone conversation and told him she had stopped drinking the diet pop AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% better, but she sure felt a lot better. She told him she was going to her doctor with this article and would call him when she got home. Well, she called, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they had consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind. In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda and literally dying a slow and miserable death. When she got to FL March 22nd, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning. Steven Kerr Essay -- Business, Creativity, Diversity

As Kerr is an educator and a professor in universities and not an economist, he examines his idea or creativity in the organization by making inquires starting from top management to the bottom in the organization and also to people who knew what the buyer or customer should be; then he would run it through his network in and outside GE to cross examination and double check or assessment (Davenport et al). Kerr’s successes effectively with the standing of ideas and creativity mainly rely on his continuing exploratory research with great creative thinking skills, expertise and motivation, and they also depend on his outstanding leadership and exceptional organizational culture of innovation in GE (Davenport et al, 2003). On the issue how to link his idea to his organization or business, Kerr simply collected and gained quick feedback and recommendation about how to present or make use of the idea or creativity to his sixty-five top executives in GE; he would assessed and examined his idea with his top management team first before link it to GE (Davenport et al). Davenport, Prusak & Wilson (2003) analyzed and claimed that getting instant comment or criticism is very critical and vital for a idea, as Kerr in his interview argued: â€Å"Gaining quick feedback and translating it into action and results is what advocating ideas is all about† (p. 207). In strategic planning, management must measure or evaluate the courses of idea and creativity or development and expansion to ensure they obtain the best and maximum returns from platforms (Davenport). In ideas and organizational management, feedback, criticism and suggestion not only could turn or develop into the guidance, objective and dire ction or target and focus of innova... ...resent diversity within the labor force and â€Å"each of them will also have networks of professional associates whose knowledge they can tap in order to solve problems and accomplish tasks. Needless-to-say, diverse people will have diverse networks and provide your company with a vast and diverse meta-network at your disposal† (p.1). In short, in supporting of creativity, innovators essentially need the backing from top leaders, and without that support, many initiatives may break down or die on the vine (Harvard). For any idea to be successful, it is vital that it is aligned with company strategy; there is more likely to occur naturally when top executives involve and take the lead with a idea or creativity initiative and this is a main reason why management commitment is a key factor in the accomplishment of any idea or innovation process (Baumgarther, 2010).

Sleep :: Biology Essays Research Papers

Sleep Sleep has plagued the existence of complex organisms since their evolution early on in the formation of Earth. Although there are various stages to the sleep cycle, essentially one falls into a temporary coma for a few hours each day. It seems totally irrational that evolution would dictate a system where one lets down their guard for hours every day, leaving one prone to a deadly attack. It seems a fairly logical assumption that sleep is exceedingly important to life if, in order to get some rest, animals in the wild irrationally risk their lives. Our bodies are telling us that they have run at full capacity for long enough, and therefore need to replenish valuable resources. In researching sleep, I found "replenish" to be a key word. During the day, one's body is constantly metabolizing ingested food and water, turning them into useful forms of energy. The body depletes a great deal of its energy stores (glycogen, mostly) and also experiences a large buildup of toxic byproducts (lactic acid, for example) during the day.1 Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to replenish these lost stores and get rid of the toxic chemicals coursing through your blood. Four hours seems to be the minimum amount of time one can sleep per night in order to coherently function during the day. A lack of sleep can have grave consequences, greatly caused by the inability of your immune system to work without rest. Sleep is a multistage cyclic process, involving five steps. Fast waves, called "Beta" waves are those which result from being awake. Once you become sleepy and close your eyes, your body relaxes and your brain waves greatly slow down, becoming "alpha" waves. After approximately five minutes in this relaxed state, your brain waves further slow down to become "theta" waves, transporting you into Stage I sleep. Stage one sleep generally does not last very long, and is accompanied by a lowered pulse rate and slower breathing. After a few minutes in Stage I sleep, Stage II sleep begins, marked by a further slowing of brain waves as well as bursts of electrical activity, called "spindles." These bursts manifest themselves as a sort of twitching. CHAPTER 1 : THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Essay

CHAPTER 1 : THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION Not all people are given the chance to have a quality education especially in the Philippines because it is now complicated. That’s why having the chance to study and choosing the course should not be compared to something like for an example buying a dress for a special occasion and when realization comes into your mind that you don’t want it, you’ll return it or maybe get your money back. No, this isn’t right, because in college life, you have to treat every second as an important detail of your life. You should not waste every moment in it. So choosing the course which you think fits your capabilities is very important. Studying a specific course in college is not only about paying the fees rather the most important things here are the time and effort spent. Money, time and effort are the most precious things in one’s life and once it is used or spent, it’s hard to gain again or worst you may never have it at all. So the time these are wasted for nothing, for sure the blame for this mistake will be felt truly. When looking at the profile of those students who are working and at the same time is studying, you would notice that they never dare wasting their time. For them, every second counts. Make an observation and you will find out that almost all of the working students are working too hard to finish their studies. For them, wasting their effort, time and money is such a big mistake. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Student jobs have become a sort of trend among students around the world, who want to work while they are studying. In short, the term that suits this trend is ‘Earn and Learn’ policy. Other reason why student jobs are popular among students is they help to cope up with the constant increase in tuition fees, and a way to afford further educations. The problem has been developed with the question as to how the corresponding workloads and required working hours of working students affect their academic performance at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. As a researcher, the main purpose of the study is to know the factors that affect the academic performance of working students. In addition, this paper aims to provide encouragement and motivation to all students especially those who are financially distressed to pursue and finish a college degree in order to be competitive in the future and be able to realize their goals and aspirations. It may also provide learning experiences and information to other students who are not working. In order to accomplish our objectives, we adopted several methodologies in obtaining data and information such as conducting surveys by providing questionnaires to our subjects, getting information in the internet and conducting interviews personally and honestly with our target subjects to get assurance that our data, information and values gathered were correct and accurate. IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY These studies will be beneficial to the following: The Students. Because of this study, the students will be able to know the profile of the working students and they will realize the truth about what they are going through. By this process, the working students will serve as inspirations to their fellow students especially to those who are almost losing their hopes and eagerness to pursue their studies. The Mentors. This study also helps the teachers to be able to easily notice those students who were really dedicated to their studies and who were not wasting their time and money on their universities. These will also give them enough knowledge on what the working students are going through when they are studying while working. They also know those students who deserved to be given considerations. The Parents. By this study, the parents will be able to know the advantage of working while studying. And because of these, they will also realize the reason why working students are doing such, especially if their sons or daughters are one of those students who are already working or planning to have a job while studying. To the Future Researchers. This study will help them as guide in conducting their own research. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The objective of studying this matter is to know the profile of the working students and the implication on the class standing. Specifically, they need to answer these following questions: 1. What was the working students are going through while they are studying and at the same time working? 2. What are the statuses of the working students when it comes to their grades and their participation in class? SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This research is concerned on the profile of the working students based from their academic standing. This covers the engineering students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The profile of the working students will be distinguished by the aid of the questionnaires prepared by the researcher. In this research we can clearly notice the academic standing of the working students definitely by the help of the surveys conducted by the researcher.

The Great Migration created the first large urban black communities in the North. Along with massive amounts of blacks relocating to these cities also come problems. spelly blacks were crammed into housing. At times, the occupancy of the housing that they lived in exceeded the limits they were knowing for. Imagine an apartment that can reserve five people comfortably being push over the limits by having twelve people reside in it instead. These were perfect conditions for disease, unsanitary conditions, and in some uttermost(a) cases, death. These d salutaryings became to be known as ghettos. entirely good things mu st come to an end and many blacks realised that due to the mass amount of laborers that migrated to the North, many of the jobs were taken. The south offered the work of the past, but this time they would be give for it and not forced to do the work. After the Great Migration, blacks continued to move in search of opportunity as some returned to the South, while others moved to suburbs or wagerer neighborhoods within the North.(Stewart E. Tolnay 2003) An consequenceant military milestone is African American history were the Tuskegee distributemen. These bold airmen were the first step towards race equality within the aviation sector of the military. Although African Americans had regularly fought in wars, they were not allowed to participate in actual animated combat. The airmen were an import divulge in closing the race inequalities within the military. The Tuskegee airmen have become to be known as the most influential air squadron during world war two. racialism was st ill a major current issue well into world war two. whiley whites did not like the estimate of African Americans being allowed to fly airplanes and fight in aerial combat. The Tuskegee Airmen did more than just that. They became the first black Army Air Corps pilots. Their beginnings started when President Roosevelt had arranged a meeting with three African American leading of the Army and Navy. They argued that equality require to be stable throughout the military, politics needed to be fair in regards to the ongoing draft, and African Americans should be allowed to fly.(Percy 2003) dead after the meeting had concluded, the War part issued a policy directive stating that black men would be admitted into the military in numbers racket equal to civilian black population. Majority of the instructors assign to train the men were white. There were high hopes the ill fortune would occur and this would prove to the War part that African Americans were not suitable for flying. The man probably most responsible for the achievement of the Tuskegee Airmen, the man whom the cadets looked to most often, was Captain benzoin O. Davis Jr. (Percy 2003) Captain Davis helped keep the fight alive in all of the cadets which allowed them to issue the Jim Crow laws that were still in place and they were able to focus their attention on enough pilots. After the success of the Tuskegee Airmen, they became a vital part of the war effort. The Tuskegee Airmen were assigned combat missions, participating in aerial combat, and helping to win the war. The Tuskegee Airmen program was a giant step towards equality within the military and an important historical m ilestone in our history. A historied name associated with the civilian Rights movements is Rosa Parks. She was the average routine woman. She rode the handler to and from work every twenty-four hours like any other mine run person. She had acquired a job as a seamstress at a topical anesthetic department store in capital of Alabama Alabama. On the shadow of December 1, 1955, Rosa took the bus home as prescript. The public bus was split into two different characters. There was a white character and a black section. If the white section filled up, people in the black section were required to give up their seat for the whites and they would have to stand. This was an unjust law in Montgomery that many blacks disagreed with. This did not seem like the equality that they deserved. peer this law with all of the segregated run in Alabama one would value that the hatred for free African Americans ran high. Rosa refused to give up her seat disdain the threats given to her by the bus driver. (Wiltenburg, M 2001) She was arrested and forced to pay a mulct of $14, which she never did end up paying. intelligence of her arrest spread fast and immediately following the next day, flyers emerged all about Alabama black schools and businesses pleading that those who rode the bus should seek alternate means of travel. The bus company was owned by whites even though majority of the passengers were black. The actions were to show that the law was not fair to blacks and hopefully the bus company would see this through their sacking of profit due to their unfair rule. The ostracize lasted well over a year. in conclusion the United States Supreme Court govern that it was unlawful and illegal to treat people differently on the bus because of their strip color.(Wiltenburg, M 2001) The actions taken by Rosa Parks to generate a Civil Rights Movement were brave for her to conduct during the racialist times of Montgomery. Her actions set off the initial movement that wou ld pave the way for many more to come and challenge the antiblack laws that restricted the lives of black people. The Million Man March was another major event of the Civil Rights Movement. What better way to peacefully protestation the unfair treatment of African Americans than to assemble in the Nations Capital and fight for equality among all races. Some Civil Rights Leaders were contradictory to the march. Mary Frances Berry, Chair of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, estimation the actions of the march were bad due to the black community being in doubtful trouble already. (Winter, 1995-1996) Despite her disapproval, the march went on. musical composition the actual number of participants cant be pin pointed to an exact number, it is estimated that it was betwixt 1. 5 and 2 million participants. This large showing of force allowed for peaceful protest and doation for the black community. They sought to gain the attention of the Federal Government so they could overcome the harsh reality that racism was still an ongoing issue and blacks were still being treated unequally by whites.Majority of the attendees were black males. The march was also attended by origins of race that were not primarily black. They saw an opportunity to take part in the possible change of equality and rights as well. Many famous black speakers were in attendance at the march, from Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and many black phantasmal leaders. Although the peaceful protest eventually ended, it still remains one of the most talked about and biggest contributions to the Civil Rights Movements. History has shown that African Americans have faced a lot of challenges. done unfair treatment in the early beginnings of America, African Americans were used as slaves and the country saw this as a normal and legal way of life. The actions taken by President Lincoln helped shed light on the tarnished actions of the American people and he is credited with having helped free the slav es. The black codes were a way that hateful southerners could still control the lives of black people. The southerners were upset because their way of life and what they saw as normal was being changed. The passing of the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery. This was a step in the right direction and it sparked the foundation of many amendments to follow in suite. The great migration offered new hopes and promises of work in the North. Millions of African Americans began showing up in cities gauge to get a piece of the American workforce. They were met with many housing, health, and physical challenges. Some blacks realized that the work in the North was not for them and they returned to the South to continue farming of their own free will and not to a lower place the control of slavery. World War Two brought light to African Americans with the chance of becoming pilots. The Tuskegee Airmen showed courage in the face of racism and overcame the discriminations brought onto them t hrough the military. They became a vital part of the war effort and actively participated in aerial combat and bombing raids. Rosa Parks set the stepping stones for the Civil Rights movement. Her actions that night on the bus spread promptly and blacks refused to ride the buses in Montgomery Alabama. The efforts lasted well over a year and intercourse finally determined that the law was unlawful. The million man march is one of the biggest actions in the Civil Rights movement.Blacks showed in large numbers to promote equality and diminish racism on the federal level. Many key speakers participated in this march, even though leaders of the Civil Rights Committee did not agree with the march. These actions taken by African Americans represent a small portion of the triumphs that they have overcome since slavery ended. There are many events and sacrifices that have been made by African Americans through the years. Their nonstop by-line to end racism, have equality, and bring change to America will have an everlasting change on history. References Bowles, M. (2011).A history of the United States since 1865.
